"Sand."

Remember this post and how I was trying to be a cute mom and do cute things and Olivia did not like it at all?
(Speaking of which she still shakes her head and says "tas (colors) no" before every bath.
Needless to say, she is traumatized.
I mean you think she would have forgotten by now.
But despite my failure with the colorful bath I haven't given up.
This time I decided to make her some "sand" out of flour and oil.
I put it in a tupperware with some teaspoon scoopers and a little fish cup.
I am pleased to say that this activity went a lot better.
And she may have even enjoyed it a little too much!
She sat out on the porch scooping and flinging for 1 hour straight.
Which is a record.
Seriously this child has the attention span of 2 minutes.

Despite the rather large mess it made she had a blast laughing and scooping soft sand all while eating a sticky lollipop.
And I had a blast watching her play contently and really felt proud of myself for planning an activity that she actually liked.

I definitely foresee us pulling out the sand again but time is limited because we will never be playing with it inside!

*I found this idea and recipe in one of the Parents magazines up at my in-laws house.
Here it is:
4 cups of flour
1/2 cup oil
Mix it around with your fingers until the oil blends in with the flour.

  1. So I read your blog yesterday and then tried this with Elijah when I got home from work! I was hoping it would keep his attention as well as it kept Olivia's, but he played with it for maybe 5 minutes and then just wanted to play in the dirt. Haha, he had fun throwing it around though and was COVERED in flour...and then dirt on top of it. Lol. Thanks for the idea!!
